Best Hotel for Fall Activities in Chicago, IL

Fall is an all-out, full-bore fabulous time to visit the Windy City! The weather is downright perfect, the broadleaf canopies are strutting their stuff in the autumn-colors department, and there’s a whole slew of seasonal activities and events on tap.

A luxurious Autograph Collection perch at Hotel Chicago is as good as it gets when it comes to a springboard for Chicagoland fall fabulousness. Here are just a few ideas of what to see and do this time of year while enjoying our peerless River North hospitality!

Fall Festivals & Happenings

Chicago’s events calendar is stocked all year round, and fall is most certainly no exception. We’ll only gesture at a few of the autumn goings-on here, as there’s too much to cover in one measly blogpost!

Fall festivals in town cover a lot of territory, from the Chicago International Film Festival (celebrating its 58th edition October 12th through October 23rd) and Destinos: The Chicago International Latino Theater Festival (presented at multiple venues throughout the city September 14th through October 16th) to the Lincoln Park Wine Festival (October 7th through 9th) and the one-of-a-kind WingOut Chicago, bringing all-you-can-eat wings from multiple local vendors to the St. Michael’s Church parking lot October 1st and 2nd.

The Lincoln Park Zoo puts on its perennially popular Fall Fest in September and October, with a pumpkin patch (and pro-level pumpkin carvers), loads of rides, live music, and plenty of animal-viewing on tap.

Speaking of on tap, the Field Museum will open its doors to all manner of beer lovers on October 8th for the Chicago Beer Festival, featuring better than 65 breweries showcasing fall seasonal releases and more. On a similar front, enjoy some seasonal Bavarian times in the Windy City by attending Oktoberfest Chicago at St. Alphonsus, serving up sudsy craft brews, polka, and more September 23rd through the 25th.

Delve into the magnificence of Chicago’s architectural heritage during Open House Chicago, a rich program of self-guided tours, talks, and site visits presented in October by the Chicago Architecture Center. The Chicago Marathon, meanwhile—one of the largest and best-known footraces of its kind in the world—goes down on October 9th.

And don’t miss the Pier Pumpkin Lights blazing away in October over at Navy Pier!

Touring Apple Orchards & Pumpkin Patches

Picking apples (and sipping apple cider) and gallivanting through a pumpkin patch are classic fall pastimes, and you’re surprisingly well set up for indulging as a guest of ours here in Downtown Chicago. There are more than a few city pumpkin patches, including Jack’s Pumpkin Patch Pop-Up (an across-the-board fall festival that also includes an epic corn maze) and the aforementioned Fall Fest at Lincoln Park Zoo.

Or take a fall daytrip out of Hotel Chicago and visit spots such as Bengtson’s Pumpkin Farm, Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch, or Odyssey Fun Farm, or such U-pick apple destinations as Heinz Orchard and County Line Orchard.

Leaf Peeping in & Around Chicago

You’ll have lots of fall colors to enjoy right in the heart of Chicago, thanks to the city’s rich urban forest. Millennium and Lincoln parks are great spots for leaf-peeping, as are the Chicago Botanic Garden and the Morton Arboretum.

Taking a drive outside of the city shows off even more autumn canopies, not least on jaunts to such regional Chicagoland natural treasures as Indiana Dunes National Park and Illinois Beach State Park.
