Chicago boasts a whopping roster of theaters: better than 250 of them, in fact. Not all, of course, lie in the Theatre District proper, but that Downtown zone certainly exemplifies the caliber and variety of theatrical performance in the Windy City,

Venues here include the Auditorium Theatre, opened way back in 1889 and serving as home for the lauded Joffrey Ballet. Upcoming performances include Shen Yun April 7th through April 9th and American Ballet Theatre April 14th through the 16th. The 1925-opened Goodman Theatre is presenting Layalina March 3rd through April 2nd, The Cherry Orchard April 1st through April 30th, and The Who’s Tommy June 13th through July 23rd.

Among the numerous companies housed in the Theatre District is Broadway in Chicago, whose venues include the CIBC TheatreJames M. Nederlander Theatre, and Cadillac Palace Theatre. Upcoming productions include TINA – The Tina Turner Musical (March 14th through April 2nd at the Nederlander Theatre), The Book of Mormon (March 28th through April 16th at the Cadillac Palace Theatre), Jagged Little Pill (April 11th through April 23rd at the Nederlander Theatre), and Into The Woods (April 25th through May 2nd at the Nederlander).

Madison Square Garden now operates the long-standing Chicago Theatre (established 1921), which in the next near span of weeks will welcome the electric-blues outfit Tedeschi Trucks Band, famed primatologist and environmentalist Jane Goodall, Heartland rocker John Mellencamp, and singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant.

And how about Symphony Center, the Downtown home of the internationally celebrated Chicago Symphony Orchestra—founded in 1891 and currently helmed by the great Riccardo Muti?

There’s so much more, too, of course, to explore when it comes to show-going in Chicago beyond the Theatre District proper: not least checking out such utterly iconic venues as Second City’s Wells Street mainstage and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
